Heh, I wonder if Sven coop will become one of the group Christmas traditions? It's a tradition I wouldn't mind upholding.

-Titan Quest-
There is supposed to be one more part to the Phantasy Star write up that I was working on. But for the moment, I'd like to take a break from Phantasy Star and move onto a different set of hack'n slashes.
A while back, I wrote rather briefly on Diablo 2, and pretty much stated that I liked the game for building of characters from a hypothetical and statistical sense. With Diablo 3 around the corner, I'm getting pretty excited about thought of making imps and zombies explode with my monk (party allowing, of course).
I'm honestly surprised that more developers haven't really tried to blatantly replicate the formula. I can't really think of other games that play like Diablo in the strictest sense. There is Torchlight, a game developed by Runic Games, in October. And of course, there is Titan Quest, a game from Iron Lore Entertainment, released in 2006. That's about it though, it seems like such an easy, money printing gameplay design that would have been replicated to death.
In any case, Titan Quest is practically a Diablo clone, except set it ancient mythology-based Greece. Titans are stirring up trouble, and it's up to your generic hero to save the day. Truth be told, I'm not really paying much attention to to the story, but I know that it involves the murdering plenty of satyrs. That being said, it's certainly not perfect 1 to 1 conversion, as this game does add a few refinements that make the game a bit more accessible. For example, there is an NPC that allows you to reallocate your stats. And, in addition to having a storage box, there is an additional box that allows you to transfer items to your other characters. Otherwise, you point, you click, you hack, you slash, you pick up loot.
This gaming session consisted of Kuat, The Dankness, and I. Much like Diablo, it was kinda fun building characters. Well, not quite building characters, more like thinking of possible future builds. That being said, I guess we did run into that slight problem with loot sharing. Much like the original Diablo, first come first serve, so the first person to get to the item, they get it. It's a good thing that there aren't any times to get too excited over anyways. We hacked and slashed for a bit, and I guess it wasn't bad, but nagging thought kept reoccuring to me. Why was I doing this? There were plenty of games for me to play, and if I really wanted to play Diablo, why not play Diablo?
The game is alright, but I guess that's just it. I can't really praise it, but I can't necessarily say it's a terrible game.

More games that follow the Diablo formula: Sacred, Divine Divinity, Nox. I don't remember what else, but there was a while when I was really into those kind of games... so it's been done a lot. Then I got really tired of just running around places and clicking things.

Heh, I've actually played two of those. I really wasn't thinking too well when I was writing this up. Truth be told, it was lying around for a while, so I just wanted to post it. In some ways, I kinda feel the same way about Titan Quest. It's okay, but I just want to finish it.
