Heh, it's faaaar from the first death sadly. The PS3 generated at least two that I can remember offhand. But tragic none the less. I'm curious: How many of you knew that water intoxication existed? It was a suprise to me, as I learned about it on one of my classes and hadn't heard about it before.

Personally, I always figured an excess of anything could kill someone.

Personally, I always figured an excess of anything could kill someone. True, but it's suprising that you woudn't just regurgitate it at some point if done rapidly. I mean, most systems in the body have a warning or override mechanism if done really acutely, as this was done. For example, eating 10 pounds of lard. One would eventually throw up. Holding your breath, you KO and start breathing again.

Ah, so the difference in this case is that when you drink too much water, you cells just die out all at once, so there's no chance of getting help?

Ah, so the difference in this case is that when you drink too much water, you cells just die out all at once, so there's no chance of getting help? Pretty much. It's the electrolytes; she diluted the crap outta her Na and K, which causes everything from arrhymias to plain ol' brain death, as there is nothing to carry along AP's or anything. That's one reason sports players drink Gatorade and other sports drinks rather than water (actually, I think the reason). If you over hydrate yourself without replacing the electrolytes you lose, you start to feel woosy and such. Remember kids: volume depletion is different from water loss. Giving water (well, d5w) to a renal failure patient with volume depletion makes sure someone will sue your ass!

Sheesh, sounds pretty harsh. So what's the limit then?

Sheesh, sounds pretty harsh. So what's the limit then? Over the course of a day, something like ~28 liters I think. In one sitting, I think about ~1.4 liters. Depends on the status of the patient, a great deal. But a 28 year old woman... probably around that.

Heh, yeah, just got around to reading the wikipedia article. Gotta love the human body, incredible delicate yet strangly resilient.

In which case we are made of paper mache. I would sorta disagree with the wording of the intro of the article. The intake doesn't need to be especially rapid, just enough to eventually overload the kidneys.

I wish I could be a secret agent with a license to kill. I'd assassinate so creatively; excess water, direct oxygen to the bloodstream, etc.

Ugh, this reminds me of the time I got the flu and I just kept regurgitating even though the flu eventually pasted. I couldn't retain water. My body was on the fast track to dehydrating itself. Pretty much the exact opposite of what happened to this lady. Yay for moderation and a shot of whatever they gave me at the Doc's right into my leg.

I think it was a week before I left to USF for freshman year. Or maybe sophomore.

Let's just hope it never happens again. Not being able to eat isn't fun.

Tell me about it. If I could laze around with nothing to do, that's probably all I'd do. Actually, no I'd probably plonk down the cash I don't have to buy a new computer and play some REAL video games for once. Or, maybe I'd eat while playing video games at the same time. Or, maybe I could rig a machine that would feed me while I play video games, since my hands would be busy. OR, maybe I could rig a machine that would feed me so my hands would be free but I'd have prosthetics linked to nerve tissue so that I could play two different games at the same time, one on the television and one on the computer. That way I could maximize my experience. AH, what a life

Man this thread was incorrectly titled, I keep thinking some new big news could be something like the PS3 dead or whatever. Instead its about a real death, .
