Is Infinite Space like Sid Meier's Pirates but in space? Cause that would be cool.

Inject anime and make it DS only and it collapses to a resounding 0 on the awesome-o-meter.

I'd say that the main difference between Infinite Space and Sid Meier's is that Pirates was completely free-roaming, while Infinite Space is pretty much linear.

So is there anything akin to fencing, looking for treasure, raiding other ships, wooing the ladies?

So is there anything akin to fencing, looking for treasure, raiding other ships, wooing the ladies? These are things of which you can sorta do. I'm about two hours into the game. Exploration of the game is that you have a bunch of destinations, and travel in a straight line between them. During these travels you have random encounters where you fight/board that sorta deal. At your destinations, you recruit new pilots, upgrade, and do plotline stuff. So far the draw to me is customization. The battle system is not as good as the rest of the game is. Basically, I think the general consensus is that it's a good game, but certain things could have been done better. It's like you have a ton of exceptional ingredients to make anything in the world, but you make Mac N' Cheese. The cookware is state of the art, the knives you have are infinitely sharp, your cooking personnel are top notch, but end dish can only be so good. Basically, it's lots of good stuff surrounding a bland (yet unique) battle system. Again, I'm playing for customization, and a little bit of exploration and character interaction. I'm not playing to, you know, play.

One person who reviewed Infinite Space described it like this:
"It's like Scarlett Johansson in an ugly dress: sure, there's something to criticize, but you'd be an idiot to pass up on it."

This game is a god damned disease.
It starts out benign. "Hey the game play is sorta bland, but the setting and stuff is cool"
Then it sorta grows on you "Man, I better keep dodge up, but maybe if I..."
Until you are shouting at the screen "HEY BITCHES, HERE COMES A SPECIAL! I HOPE YOU DIDN'T LIKE YOUR ASS, BECAUSE I'M BURNING IT OFF WITH HOT PLASMA"
"YOU STUPID ASS SHIP CAN'T YOU HIT ANYTHING WHAT DO I PAY YOU ASSHOLES FOR"
It's quite a fun game, and works rather well. I was initially hoping for Homeworld DS, but this is cool too. It's much less strategy as it is a management game of sorts. The characters are nice, and the plot is good enough. The technobabble is still a bit much for me, but like everything else in this game, it's growing on me.
Long story short: worth the money.

Heh, I should probably try that out. The first one was pretty fun. Any notable new additions to the second?

Never played the first one. However, looking at the first one now, there are a lot of new additions. For example, you can select between virus, bacteria, and parasite which have different stats. There are more specific regions. Madagascar is hard to infect, they say. Instead of a limit of days, you play for how long the disease lasts.

Played that one a while back. Did you manage to get Madagascar?
