Yep, I heard about a couple hours ago. Pretty random. This is going to make Dark Knight a lot more disturbing than it would naturally be.

This really made me sad. I was starting to like the old mate, he was doing such a good job as the joker. The performance will be legendary, being his last. There also probably won't be a Batman 3.

Yeah, this is going to make me a bit sad watching The Dark Knight. And hey, at least he had the satisfaction of going out with something cool. Not like poor Raul Julia...

Apparently it was the role as the Joker that led to his death. As he said in an interview, he lost much sleep over focusing all his energy into that character, going with as little as two hours of sleep each night. It got so bad that he had to start taking those pills just to get those two hours. He must've really been wanting to sleep this time, and sadly and ironically, he's going to be sleeping forever now. Looking forward to his Joker performance, at least it got done.

Oh I bet there will be a Batman 3. Just sans Joker, unfortunately.

Maybe so, but not as an accurate continuation of this series. I've got two good reasons why. First of all, Christopher Nolan didn't even want to do this one, it wasn't until he found a good joker in Ledger that he was inspired to continue with the series, and now that he's gone he probably won't have much of a reason to do a third. So it is likely that he will quit, and along with him Christian Bale, because he likes Nolan's take on the character and wouldn't want to do a different interpretation of it, this is the main reason why he didn't sign on for Justice League, because their Batman is a different less dark version. So yeah, there might be a third, but if Nolan and Bale finish off the trilogy it would be a miracle.
You could also look at it another way; the studio will want to have the trilogy completed, and Nolan, out of wanting to have a good Batman Trilogy, might want to finish it off just for goodness' sake. But there has to be a joker, because at the end of The Dark Knight, which is completed, he is imprisoned and ready to go on trial in the next movie, in which he scars Harvey Dent, thus allowing him to become Two-Face, the last main villain.

Should've filmed it in one go a la Lord of the Rings, I suppose.
