"Of course," he responds. "I am Archibald Kronkite. I'm a guide and assistant for those who combat the Dark Forces...by trade." He takes your hand, gives it a firm grip, and shakes it. But he never removes his gaze from the chess board. As you are doing so, you examine the room. The chair Archibald is sitting on is a Regal chair, topped with blue vinyl cushion. As with most chairs of that decade, there are no arm rests. The table is a simple steel table with 3 legs. The man interrupts your examination. "Are you usually this careful?" He never removes his sight from the chess board. You continue your examination of the area and the man. Nothing really stands out about either, but you can't seem to find a bathroom or a kitchen. "Ah, sorry if I seem rude." I straighten up in the seat. "I think I'll cut pleasantries and ask just what is going on here. I've seen many a strange sight today, and you describe yourself as an agent against the 'forces of darkness'. This is all very unfamiliar to me, and I think it would aid us both if I were more oriented to... the situation at hand. If, that is, you need anything of me." I glance at the board. "By the way, is it my turn?" Examine chessboard. As in, what pieces are in play, etc. If you don't want to go into detail, my character will be playing defensively and will make the most conservative moves possible. In which case, I make a move after I make these comments.

As we speak, a cult is making an attempt to resurrect a dead god; Richard and I worked together to stop them. However, seeing that you are here instead of him, I can only assume the worse has come to pass." You take a seat and make your move. You ignore the exposed bishop, and opting to reinforce an exposed knight with a pawn. Archibald finally looks up and gives you a quizzical look. "Huh, I didn't see that one." Archibald returns his gaze to the board while reaching into his pocket. He pulls out a photograph. "If you want to continue this game, find this man. Richard was working with him before he disappeared." He hands you the picture. You attempt take the picture from his hand, but doesn't quite release his grip on it. You both sit in an awkward silence for a few moments before he beings to speak again. "By the way, do you know what happened to Richard?"

There was also a rather strong smell of ammonia; I'm not sure if that is of any import. I was about to contact the authorities when I was transported here." I cough. "And as to your earlier question, yes I do have the ring." I gaze at the board again. "As much as I do enjoy a game of chess, the situation you presented seems rather dire. Am I really suited for this job? I don't know if I can fare better than your friend."

"Richard considered going to a particular Italian restaurant. I don't know the name of it, but he might have written it down somewhere on his person." The lights begin to glow dim around you. It almost seems as if the room around you is beginning to fade away. Archibald speaks a few final words before your meeting is adjourned. "Funny thing about being "suited" for this job. Richard pondered the same thing..." The room fades away and you find yourself in darkness. You awaken back in the alley. There is a note book lying in the spot where Richard's body should have been.

You logically go to the last entry. It states, "Go to Luigi's" Hmm, Luigi's. I'm going to take a truly great leap of logic and assume that is the name of the Italian eatery. However, before I proceed, I want to thoroughly investigate this journal. After all, this may have the thoughts and plans of a man whom I'm now filling in for. It would be rather foolish to go forward without a painstaking examination of the contents of this book. As they say, those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it, and I'd rather not end up like my predecessor needlessly. Since you stated "last entry" I'm going to assume there are ones previous. Also, I want to examine the notebook for any interesting markings, stains, or composition, as well as just a cursory description of the handwriting (such as ink vs pencil, etc).

This'll take a while to make Heh, I figured as much as why you made the earlier response. However, my character wouldn't have proceeded otherwise, unless the book burst into fire ;D

After staring at the notebook to no avail for many hours, I decide to go the Luigi's, as clearly I am incapable of deciphering the book, or at least have suffered some sort of stroke that has disabled me for quite some time.

The book you had been looking at has been reduced to a pile of ashes in your hands. It had apparently combusted at some point while you were staring blankly at it. Your clothes seem dirtier than they were when you first read the book.
You head over to Luigi's. But it seems to be closed.
