Blazblue was supposed to be released much later actually, but it's funny how it was handled. I pre-ordered it, and what I ended up getting was the limited edition version. While it doesn't include anything particularly spectacular (music disks and a blu-ray disk with a tutorial), it was apparently the same price as the standard edition. And it came out earlier.
This certainly put me in a much better mood given that I heard Arksys were going to stop making Guilty Gear because Sega was just sitting on the rights to it. With Arksys in a bit of a jam, they just decided to make a game that ultimately became the spiritual successor to Guilty Gear. I was a bit skeptical at first, only because I was a just a tad disappointed that certain characters I liked just wouldn't be coming back in the original form. Not only that, but the new characters did seem more or less transposed from the Guilty Gear series, but instead of Sol Badguy, it seemed like we were getting Bol Sadguy instead.
Of course, I got over that pretty quickly. When it comes down to it, sometimes I wish more companies did this with their ideas. It's always hard to do this with an establish property because gamers are really an odd bunch. Well, vocal gamers at least. On one hand, the community in general seems to frown upon an idea or a concept being reused too many times. At the same time, rabid fanboys seem to really dislike a major change in an establish property, fighting tooth and nail, to ensure that it has the same "feel". Of course, I am super-simplifying the issue. I also sorta devolved into fanboy moments myself, of course, that was when I was much younger and cared about such things.
When it comes to Blazblue, though, I do feel that it has managed to have a similar and familar "feel" of Guilty Gear while still holding on to it's own identity. I wish I could really describe this feeling, but I haven't played the game too long honestly, and this sort of vagueness and incompleteness should be expected with a "First Impression" article. The new characters do seem cut-and-pasted at times, but they're pretty cool for the most part, and in some cases, more cooler than some of the Guilty Gear cast. To bad they don't have Slayer.
So from all two hours that I've played it I can say, yeah it's fun.
