Anyway, my Hard Drives failed not too long ago (I think due to the anti-virus the school made me install, buncha bastards), giving me quite the headache.
However, through some tinkering and such, they live again! Sorta, I need to reinstall windows, but for now I'm using linux (an alternate operating system). Heh, the only reason I need to install windows is for games, strangely enough.
So, what did I use?
BartPE - www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/
Knoppix - www.knoppix.org/
Trinity Rescue Kit - trinityhome.org/Home/index.php?wpid=1&front_id=12
Bart PE is basically a windows install that you can run from your CD rom drive. You can also hardwire Nero (the buring program) onto it, giving you a way to salvage files.
Knoppix is a linux install on a CD, akin to BartPE. The advantages are that Linux can be less... picky... than windows in what it runs on. Bart has limited functionality, while right now I'm posting from Knoppix. Also, it comes with drivers and everything already bundled (kinda, sorta, just for know let's just say it does), so you can just plop it in a CD tray and boom you have a fully functional OS, complete with web browsing (Firefox... modfied; called IceWeasel), word processing (Open Office, which I was using on windows before anyway), and a host of other useful little apps.
The Trinity Rescue kit is a hodgepodge of repair utilities for an almost dead HD. It runs via command prompt (the other two utilize the command prompt but still have a GUI) so it can seem a bit intimidating, but its utility is undeniable.
Anyway, mixing and matching these things, I'm currently porting my files off, and using my computer with pretty much full functionality. I can't play any games with it, and my internet connection is shoddy (thanks to the fucktards over at networking, god spit on their whore mothers and curse their fetid progeny), but it's all there otherwise.
I suggest, for sake of argument, you guys prep a BardPE and a Knoppix CD... just in case. Just need two blank CDs, they can come quite in handy.
Edit: I should also say I was able to diagnose my problem as a corrupted master boot record; thus a software not a hardware problem. While you can use the same stuff in a hardware failure, other variables get involved that aren't too pretty; TRK would be your best bet, and knoppix if you had a computer with NO hard drive. Bart is only good (well, is better for) software problems (as in a corrupted something). Hardware usually IDs itself via clicking and clacking and such.
