Val told me you guys were talking about how glorious Serenity was while at Minoto's and somehow my well-known distaste was brought up. Considering how charitable you folks are, I bet my position was a respected one (lolz).
Well I'm here to explain my reasons.
When I watch a scifi movie or television program, I'm looking for original ideas with the premise of the series. Dune deals with religious extremism, economic politics, and mysticism. Star Trek deals with utopian exploration, cultural interactions, general theories on physics. Star Wars deals with a corrupt Impire, rogue resistance, and taoistic spirituality. The Firefly series doesn't seem like it has anything going for it except the rogue type stuff borrowed from Star Wars. It's like a bad Star Wars D&D made into a mini series.
But this isn't to say no one else can like it. These are just reasons why I don't think it's all that great. Oh, and Serenity was also just generally cheesy.

Well, I never saw firefly, and I don't want to. But Serenity does have some originality in it. It may be similar to Star Wars in the fact that both the main groups of characters are running from an Empirical body that is in search of a person/droid (River/R2-D2) with information that could be devastating to their power, and the fact that the captain is similar to Han Solo, but the similarities end there.
Anyway, instead of responding directly to your post, I'm going to talk about what I like about Serenity.
WARNING: SPOILERS.
First, the plot twist midway through the movie, when the Crew lands on MIRANDA. The fact that the Reavers, the source of much fear to the worlds of their solar system, were created by the Government themselves is a very political statement. In fact it might be allegory for the conspiracy theories involving our own government and, overall, how often governments betray the trust of their own people.
The Second thing I liked about this movie is the way in which it develops. In SPACE/SF movies, you are typically thrown right into some Giant space battle or Interstellar conflict, while this movie develops its characters first and later puts them, reluctantly, into one.
Now, yeah this may not be much to give weight to my argument, but the truth of the matter is, none of us are crazy about this movie anyway. You're acting like we are. We saw it once and it was good. Personally, I think there are many other BETTER science fiction movies out there, including:

But I have a counterpoint: Your taste sucks. I think my opinion has some pretty solid footing.
